Method for determining a critical slagging region on the heating surface walls of a combustion chamber of a coal dust firing installation comprises determining an intensity signal of a flame detector (5) of the combustion chamber over a time period and forming a signal to display the critical slagging region when the intensity signal is not exceeded based on the covering of the detector by a molten slag flow (6). Preferred Features: The time period for determining the intensity signal is adjusted between 15-120 minutes, preferably 60 minutes.
