Antimicrobial mixture or paste for providing glasses or vitreous ceramics with an antimicrobial finish contains at least (a) antimicrobially-effective metal salt(s) as oxide, (b) sulfate(s) and (c) at least one organic matrix, in which the salt is embedded. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) process for providing glasses or vitreous ceramic with an antimicrobial finish using this mixture; (2) use of the antimicrobial mixture or paste in this process; (3) glass or vitreous ceramic with an antimicrobially-effective concentration of metal ions, especially silver ions; (4) vitreous ceramic hob with antimicrobial finish produced by the cited process.
