Water-free metal oxide colloids and/or metal oxide polymers (I) in an aprotic, organic solvent or solvent mixture, are new. Water-free metal oxide colloids and/or metal oxide polymers (I) of formula ([M(O)X 3X 4] n) in an aprotic, organic solvent or solvent mixture, are new. M : Si, Ge, Sn, Ti, Zr or Hf; X 3, X 4O 1 / 2, H or alkoxy (-OR); R : 1-20C alkyl, 6-20C aryl (both optionally substituted with halo such as F, Cl, Br or I) or 1-20C organo radical; and n : 10-1000000. An independent claim is also included for the preparation of (I).
