A point of origin and determining its coordinates are specified in a digitized map display (1). An origin tree structure is produced based on the point of origin. A point of reference and its coordinates are specified on another map display (8). A reference tree structure is then generated based on the point of reference. Both structures are compared, and other reference tree structures from other specified points of reference are repeatedly produced until both structures match. The traffic route section (2,9) is then determined from matching points of origin and of reference.
