The brake has a brake unit for locking wheels of a vehicle. An activation unit (1) comprises a spring brake for activating the brake unit and a piston (3). A hydraulic pretensioning unit is provided for pretensioning the spring brake. The activation unit has a locking device comprising a retaining plate (7), solenoid coil (9), spring unit (8) and an intermediate plate. The spring unit is provided for pretensioning the intermediate plate against the retaining plate. The retaining plate is connected to a casing (2) that is rotatable relative to the piston. An independent claim is also included for a method of activating a hand brake of a vehicle.
