The engine has a liquefied petroleum gas controller (9) assigned to a fuel supply device (10) for controlling supply of liquefied petroleum gas. The controller is connected with a measurement reading device for determining residual oxygen content in exhaust gas via a control line during operation with the petroleum gas. A measured value signal of the measurement reading device is assessable by a lambda probe (7) depending on preset operating characteristic. The measured value signal is adjustably stored in a controller memory for optimization of the oxygen content in the exhaust gas. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
