The arm rest (1) is pivotable from a support position to a resting position, in which the arm rest is arranged in a section clamped by a backrest of a seat. The arm rest is guided in a guide rail (16) that is parallel to the section and arranged perpendicular to an upper edge of the backrest, where the height of the arm rest is adjustable by a tackle. The tackle is connected with a Bowden cable motor (4) and driven by the electric motor in two directions, where the motor is fastened to a body (9) of a motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for lowering a height adjustable arm rest.
