Procedure for the determination of tortuosity of a porous catalyst carrier material, comprises determining a self-diffusion (D) of a gas or a liquid in the carrier material and self-diffusion (D0) of free gas and/or free liquid and calculating the quotient of D/D0. Independent claims are included for: (1) a catalyst carrier material from the porous carrier material with a tortuosity coefficient (tau ) of 1.5-4; (2) a dehydrogenation catalyst with improved deactivation characteristics, comprising one or more active metals in elementary form and/or oxidic form on the catalyst carrier material; (3) a dehydrogenation catalyst (tau of 1.5 to 4) consisting of a porous carrier body with an applied active mass; (4) heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation of a reaction gas mixture containing one or more dehydrogenatable 2-30C-hydrocarbons, comprising contacting the reaction gas mixture containing the dehydrogenatable hydrocarbons with the dehydrogenation catalyst; (5) determination of the tortuosity of a catalyst comprising the porous carrier material with an applied active mass, comprising determining the self-diffusion (D) of a gas or a liquid in the catalyst and the self-diffusion (D 0) of the free gas and/or the free liquid and calculating the quotient (D/D 0); and (6) a catalyst comprising a porous carrier material and the applied active mass with a tortuosity coefficient of 1.5-4.
