The device has a diagnostic unit (1) that is activated when specified conditions of the technical device are present. The unit is deactivated when specified conditions of the technical device are not present, where information indicating technical condition, which is not present, is stored in storage spaces (231-235, 241-245) during deactivation of the diagnostic unit. The unit completes the diagnosis of the technical device when the specified conditions are present for a specified time. The unit has a counter (251) that counts when the diagnosis is completed. An independent claim is also included for a method of diagnosing a technical device.
