The crankshaft has a sender disk with a marking with alternate teeth and gaps and an associated first sender that generates an electrical signal that can adopt at least two signal levels associated with teeth and gaps. The method involves a controller determining the crankshaft revolution rate (nmot) from the quotient of an angle covered between two teeth and a weighted mean tooth period (Tzgmittel). An independent claim is also included for a controller for determining an internal combustion engine crankshaft revolution rate.
