An optical observation device, in particular glasses (10), reading aid or telescope, has an optical element that can be adjusted in terms of its refractive power, in particular spectacle lenses (16R, 16L), a sensor (24), and a control device (30) for adjusting the refractive power as a function of it of signals from the sensor (24). The sensor (24) is a brightness sensor. In a method for the controlled setting of a refractive power of an optical element in an optical observation device, an optical parameter is detected by means of a sensor (24) and the refractive power is set as a function of a signal from the sensor (24). The brightness of the light (26) incident in the optical device is detected by means of the sensor (24) (FIG. 1).
