The method involves coupling an output signal of an oscillator with an input of an asynchronous binary counter (13). The outputs of the counter are synchronously selected in predetermined read time intervals. The selected values are added over a predefined integration time interval, which corresponds to the duration of the read time interval, so that a phase information value and a frequency information value are derived. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining the phase and frequency of a voltage-controlled oscillator (2) the use of a device for determining the phase and frequency of a voltage-controlled oscillator.
