Device for preparing a sample stores the working reagents in dry form embedded in a biologically degradable medium which is water-tight in the non-degraded state. Independent claims are also included for: (1) preparing the sample; and (2) producing the above device. Preferred Features: The reagents and the biologically degradable medium form a non-homogeneous mixture. The medium forms a protective layer for the reagents.
