The method involves providing a set of models, which consist of accident parameters. A sensor signal is received during a real accident situation of a vehicle (3). A probability assigned to the model is determined based on whether the characteristics of the signal reach a pre-determined value. An estimated value is automatically determined by a data processing device (6) according to the accident situation based on the accident parameters and the probability assigned to the model. A person protection device is controlled corresponding to the probability by a controlling device (8).
