The method involves differentiating an object e.g. pedestrians, in the surrounding of a vehicle (FZ) based on a signal from pre-crash sensors (LRR1, LRR2) e.g. ultrasonic sensor. A determination is made to check whether the object is movable or immovable, and a person protection device (PS) for the vehicle is controlled based on the differentiation. A fixedly stored speed is used as an impact speed when the signal is assigned to the movable object, and a misuse is determined with the immovable object based on the signal from the pre-crash sensors and a signal from an impact sensor (BS1). An independent claim is also included for a control device for controlling a person protection device for a vehicle.
