The tensioner has a gear rod (18), and a pinion (16) that is rotatably supported in a housing (12), where a gear tooth (20) of the gear rod directly contacts with the pinion and is driven by a drive unit (26). The gear rod has a form of circular arc and is moved in a circular path (K) during activating the drive unit. A central point (M) of the circular path is displaced against an axis of rotation of the pinion.
