The method involves providing a program of a receiver-internal part of a conditional access (CA) system as software update on a free-to-air (FTA) receiver (1). The receiver is enabled to use several hardware descramblers that are applied on coded digital video broadcast (DVB) data stream. A receiver-external part of the CA system is provided with a simcard (SC) reader dongle (3) and a simcard (4). The receiver-external part is bidirectionally communicated with the receiver via an interface (5) to read the card. Access authorization stored on the card is verified according to the CA system. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for operating a conditional access (CA) system in a digital free-to-air (FTA) receiver for decoding certain coded digital television broadcasts.
