Device has at least one lighting device (6a-6f) which throws a beam on the container (8), typically bottle seal (9), to be inspected and observation device (3a,3b) which shows an area of the container being examined. Observation device is directed at least at the upper area of the container. The path of the beams (La,Lb,Ra,Rb) from the container to the light reaching the observation device runs at least in parts along a plane which is essentially vertical to the lengthwise direction of the container.
