A method for the production of printable paper by treating the surface of the paper with a polymer, involves using an amphoteric polymer (I) which is obtained by reacting (a) polymers containing prim. and/or sec. amino groups with (b) alkylating agent(s) with at least one acid group, a salt of an acid group or a capped acid group and optionally (c) at least one crosslinker with at least two groups which react with amino groups.
