A brake system for a vehicle comprises a control valve unit (EPM) applying brake pressure to at least one brake cylinder (6,8) in dependence of a driver-operated transmitter (2) and at least one second control valve (PCV) with brake pressure leads (10,12) between them and with both units under electronic control (ECU). There are means of detecting an emergency situation and, if the driver has not operated the transmitter (2) the valve units (ECM,PCV) are controlled to block connection between leads and cylinders and control the pressure.
