The clothes drum (2) has air from a fan (4) pumped into it which is extracted (3) through a duct housing the evaporator (5) and condenser (7) of a heat pump circuit (5-11) comprising a compressor (9), expansion valve (8), temperature sensor (14) and auxiliary heat exchanger (10) and valve (11) by which the heat can be diverted to the atmosphere. An electronic system (12) controls the functions of the complete system.
