The method involves measuring pressure in a combustion chamber, and determining the combustion-start based on the measured pressure. The volume of the chamber is measured, and the heat released in the chamber is calculated from the measured volume and the pressure. The integral of the heat is calculated between an injection start and a combustion end. The stationary initial and end values of the integral of the released heat are determined, and the combustion-start is accepted when the integral exceeds a given threshold. An independent claim is also included for a motor control unit for execution of a method of determining combustion-start of a mixture in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine.
