The parking assistant has a detection mode which identifies parking opportunities (4a-4d) for the vehicle (1), using a continuously-scanning sensor. Information detected, is transmitted to a vehicle navigation system. In a parking assistant selection mode switched on by the driver, the information can be recalled and displayed. Detection mode is activated by starting the engine. Geographic data concerning the parking opportunity is stored in the navigation unit, together with information concerning the size and orientation of the parking place. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method.
