The system has two different image sensors e.g. remote infrared image sensor and a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera chip, where data of the sensors are read and merged to form a three-dimensional (3D) image. The sensors are sensitive in different spectral regions e.g. infra-red regions. The image sensors exhibit different imaging areas, where the imaging areas partially overlap and the position of an overlapping area is provided in a received image. Predetermined image characteristics are used as marks, where the images are merged based on the marks. An independent claim is also included for a surrounding detection system for a motor vehicle.
