The method involves identifying a selection probability by the data processing device. Multiple character groups (3,4) are made from the available figures, so that the sum of the selection probability of figures of each group is preferably similar to a target value. The character groups are distinguished and indicated on the display means (1). One of the character groups is selected with the help of input means. The selection probability of each figure of the selected character group is increased and selection probability of each figure of the non-selected character groups is reduced. An independent claim is also included for a device for character input with a data processing device.
