The method for controlling power take-up from a vehicle engine (15) by its generators (19a, 19b) during a thrust or braking phase comprises measuring the instantaneous operating parameters of the engine and deriving a desired power take-up value. Actual instantaneous values are compared with this and the power take up controlled accordingly. An independent claim is included for a vehicle electrical system for use in the method.
