The system has a step-ahead cylinder air masses (GPO) predictor module determining GPO for a cylinder based on GPO prediction models. A fuel mass conversion module regulates fueling to a cylinder of an internal combustion engine based on the step-ahead GPO until a combustion event of the cylinder. The GPO prediction models are calibrated based on data from test starts that are based on a pre-defined test schedule. An independent claim is also included for a method of calibrating a step-ahead cylinder.
