Multifunctional hard material (ceramic, sic) coating on a substrate where the coating has a single phase crystalline structure and includes metastable mixed crystals of at least two mutually insoluble hard materials as material components where these include at least one metallic hard material (4) and an ionic hard material (6). The substrate can be based on metal,cemented carbide, an alloy, glass, ceramic, or polymer. An independent claim is included for a method of producing the hard material.
