Transgenic mesenchymal stem cells stably expressing tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) are produced by retroviral transduction with TRAIL cDNA cloned into a retroviral transduction system with a self-inactivating 3' long terminal repeat. An independent claim is also included for producing cells as above by isolating mesenchymal stem cells from the mononuclear cell fraction of tissues, e.g. bone marrow, adipose tissue or cord vein blood, by plastic adherence, culturing the cells in an expansion medium and transducing the cells with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) cDNA cloned into retroviral transduction system after reverse transcription and sequence-specific amplification. ACTIVITY : Cytostatic. MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
