The method for checking the operability of a secondary air system of an internal combustion engine entails controlling the secondary air flow cross section of the system by means of two secondary air valves (46,48). One of the two secondary air valves is controlled to the closed position while the other is controlled to the open position. The assessment of the operability is carried out for a section (52,54) of the secondary air system in which is located the secondary air valve which is controlled to open. An independent claim is included for a control device of an internal combustion engine which is intended for controlling the order of events of a method for checking a operability of a secondary air system of the internal combustion engine.
