The apparatus has a damper plate operatively coupled to a vehicle opening device to move the vehicle opening device between an open position and a closed position. Two electrical terminals are interconnected by a resistive coupler to form a circuit. A controller (82) measures an operating characteristic in the circuit. The controller compares a measured value for the operating characteristic against a preset value to determine whether a pinch condition exists. A coupler ring is manufactured from a pressure sensitive conductive rubber such as Zoflex(RTM: not defined). An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a pinch condition in a vehicle closure device.
