An exhaust gas stream (G) particle detector has a sensor (2) with insulated (6) electrodes with parallel points in the center of the flow applying a field across the flow where it is focussed (8) by a funnel into the sensor behind a coarse filter with the applied voltage set so that discharges only occur when particles are present. An independent claim is included for using the sensor.
