The particle sensor (10) has measuring electrodes (12,14) forming a measuring structure which is electrically connected with a control unit (26). The measuring structure is electrically connected with an anode (28) through an electrolyte (30) made of yttrium-stabilized zirconium oxide. The control unit is made to control short-circuit between the measuring electrodes during application of voltage between anode and measuring structure, where the measuring structure is wired cathodically. An independent claim is included for method for operating sensor.
