Following an end break, the rotor box cover (10) is opened and the rotor cleaned in the normal manner. The box is then closed and the rotor driven at reduced speed while fibers from the opening roller (8) are collected in the rotor groove. The piecing procedure is then continued with a start-up yarn during which the amount of fiber collected in the rotor is taken into account. The suction can be maintained or reduced during rotor cleaning and the opening roller driven or stopped. An independent claim is included for a multi-position open-end spinning machine with central suction in which the suction at each position can be controlled separately. The sliver feed (6) and the opening roller (8) speed can also be controlled separately. The sliver (2) can be stopped or retracted during an end-break.
