The device has a measuring apparatus for measuring a current used by a direct current motor (202) to move a barrier (215), and another measuring apparatus for measuring a generated voltage of the motor. A transistor-controller (212) is programmed to calculate a torque of the motor by using the current and to determine when an obstruction exists in a path of the barrier based upon the calculated torque. The controller is programmed to determine a speed of the motor from the generated voltage, and to determine a position of the barrier using the speed. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining operating information about a dc motor.
