The method involves determining condition value for a condition of a ship, and calculating a suitable standard value (Vwg) for a turning speed of the ship depending on the condition value of the ship by a calculating unit (22). The standard value for the turning speed is displayed by an indicating device (30), and a preset curve is loaded to the actual position of the ship. The standard value is determined depending on position, speed and the preset curve of the ship. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for assisting navigation of a ship.
