The stacking machine for cut timber has a reel (41) of cardboard strip (50) which is fed via a feed roller (44) and guide rollers (42, 43, 45A) over the upper surface of the stack (20), forming a separating layer for timber in the stack. The feed roller has a V-shaped rim and folds the strip longitudinally. A cutter (46) then trims the strip to size.
