Six-speed electromechanical transmission and method of redesigning a transmission

There is provided an electromechanical transmission having a drive member for receiving power from a machine and an output member. A plurality of gear members are operable to change a speed ratio between the input member and the output member. The drive is connected to one of the gear elements and the output is connected to another of the gear elements. A motor / generator is constantly operatively connected to the output member (via a planetary gear set) in parallel with the gear member which is constantly connected to the output member. The motor / generator is axially packed between the drive element and the plurality of gear elements. The motor / generator is packaged in a packing space that is typically used for a torque converter in a non-electromechanical transmission. Thus, reconstructing the non-electromechanical transmission to achieve the electromechanical transmission involves a minimum number of steps.
