The starter has a reduction gear (4) reducing speed of an armature shaft (14) of an electric motor (2) to provide a torque to an output shaft (5). A pinion (6) is disposed on the shaft (5) in constant clutch engagement with a ring gear (29). The pinion rotates to transmit the torque from the shaft to the ring gear to start an engine. A unidirectional clutch (7) allows the shaft (14) to turn only in the normal direction and has an internal part (34) disposed on the shaft (14). Rollers (37) of the clutch are blocked during the transmission of the torque from the shaft (5) to the shaft (14).
