The method involves measuring an extinction by different extinction distances. A process of length-specific extinction values related to one extinction distance is evaluated for determining a characteristic parameter. Extinction values without multiple scattered lights are determined from one of the length-specific extinction values. The parameter is directly determined by combining the length-specific extinction value and the corresponding extinction.
