The apparatus has an electrospray assembly (120) including a voltage gradient to produce charged droplets of a sample. Electrospray ionization chamber (100) includes a vent (160) and an electric field region proximate to a dispensing end (123) of the assembly to attract the droplets produced by the assembly and another electric field region that repels the droplets to a greater degree than the former field. A concentric tube (124) generates a gaseous stream in a gas flow path, where the stream provides the droplets with sufficient velocity to overcome the repulsive force of the latter field. An independent claim is also included for a method for ionizing a sample.
