The method involves feeding the switching of a grid (5) through the power supply voltage, which operates on a breakdown of the power supply voltage or a fall of the power supply voltage below a predetermined limiting value on an alternative grid (6), with one or more emergency lights (3). The emergency lighting system has a monitoring unit and control unit (1a,1b) and is equipped with an emergency light operating device (2), which is connected over the alternative grid with each other. The data is exchanged between the monitoring unit and control unit and the emergency light operating device. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling and monitoring of an emergency lighting system.
