The mechanism has a clamping area formed on a work piece profile (17), where the clamping area is formed from respective front surfaces (19) of clamping units (3a, 3b, 3c) that are adjustable to each other. The clamping units are fixable together by a thrust bearing (7) in a fixed position in a friction-fit manner. The clamping units have sectional contact surfaces (12), which form a frictional end in the fixed condition. The clamping units are formed as lamella-shaped and are arranged as clamping unit stack. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for processing workpieces, such as machine tool, profile processing unit or machining center with a clamping mechanism (2) a clamping device for holding the workpieces, such as chuck, a clamping jaw or a workpiece holder (3) a clamping unit suitable for utilizing in a clamping mechanism.
