The device has a camera (3) provided for imaging a labeled area of a bottle (2), and luminescent screens (6a-6c) arranged in a semicircle. The screens radiate linearly polarized light for illuminating the bottle, where a polarization plane of the light is aligned right-angle to a vertical axis of the bottle and/or parallel to a transport level of the bottle. The camera has a linear polarization filter (7) at a light emitting surface that is aligned perpendicular to a conveying plane. Reflectors are arranged between the camera and the bottle for producing optical paths.
