The apparatus has a hopper of a color of powder coating material, and a pump (16) moving the powder coating material from the hopper through a manifold, a hose and a spray gun. A source of compressor air is connected to the manifold, hose and gun which when turned on purges powder coating material out of the manifold, hose and gun. A controller is operatively connected to selectively turn on pumps and the compressed air source. A remote activation function signals the controller to turn on the compressed air source. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a material changer for a material application system, comprising a manifold (2) a method for initiating a color change operation.
