Handheld, optionally motor-driven tool for beading sheet metal, used e.g. in automobile bodywork repair or prototyping, includes roller spring-loaded against adjustable jaw
A beading roller (4) with a running surface (4a) turns about an axis (R) on the tool frame (1, 2). A counter-pressure jaw (5) faces the running surface, to accept the force exerted against the component (B1) by the beading roller. The handle (3) connected to the frame, is used to guide the tool during beading. The jaw forms a cushion sliding against the component, or against a protection pressed against it. The jaw is bulged spherically and/or two-dimensionally, facing the roller. The roller is turned about the axis by a motor, or manually, using a lever. It is alternatively turned by the handle (3). The handle includes a cavity containing a drive shaft for the roller. The shaft extends through the handle. There is a connection (8) for an external drive at the base of the handle. This connection is preferably of a plug-in type, optionally polygonal. The handle includes a hand grip coaxial with the rotation axis. The running surface (4a) is textured. The roller diameter increases along the axis, setting up a difference in the rolling path over the axial width of the running surface. This compensates curvature in the rolled edge of the component. The running- and counter surfaces (4a, 5a) form a parallel-walled gap in a longitudinal section including the roller axis. Gap spacing is adjustable. The roller or jaw can be swung or moved linearly into and out from the beading position, using an adjuster (10-13) dedicated to this purpose. A further linear gap-adjuster is provided. A dished spring washer pack presses roller and jaw together resiliently, during beading.
