The device has a conveyor belt (3) overlaid with supporting units (7) that are movable transverse to a conveying direction. The belt is formed from profile bars (4), which lie parallel to one another, and each profile bar has an oval cross section. The length dimension of the ovals is arranged in the edge of the assigned strand of the belt. Each bar is formed as closed profile and stands in effective connection with a strand shaped conveying unit with its free end.
