To renovate buildings, the existing building (1) is retained and a new shell (2) is erected around it with a new superstructure (3). The foundations are at least two rows of piles (11), with one row at a gap around the old building and the second row at a gap from it by at least the width of stairs. The supports on the piles carry a floor level (13) over the old building and further levels (14) above it. The outer pile supports (12) carry the floor levels of the new building, forming independent carrier structures (15) for each.
