The reader has a card receiver (1), which exhibits electrical contacts (7) for electrical connection with an electrical contact region of an electronically readable chip card that is insertable into the card receiver. The card receiver has a sealing lip (9) that seals the contact region and the electrical contacts with the chip card. The sealing lip is arranged on a base (3) of the card receiver, where the sealing lip completely surrounds the contacts of the card receiver. A spring clip is provided at the card receiver to press the card into an assigned state against the sealing unit.
