The system has an infrared arrangement that illuminates a section of road with an infrared transmitter (SE), receives infrared radiation from the road with an infrared receiver (EE) and evaluates the intensity of reflected radiation in two different wavelength regions to indicate the road condition. The transmitter varies the intensity of the emitted radiation in at least one of the two wavelength regions and the receiver correlates at least part of the reflected radiation with the time profile of the intensity variation of the emitted radiation.
